Building 36 Website Redesign

Building 36 provides companies in the HVAC, plumbing, and energy business a home automation platform for the customers they serve.

As part of a startup team with limited resources, we needed to redesign our website to accurately reflect that. However, Building 36 doesn’t sell directly to customers, they sell to HVAC companies, plumbers, and electricians called dealers who in turn sell to homeowners. Check out the live site here.

Key Outcomes

  • Provide more relevant information for dealers selling to homeowners
  • Articulate the benefits of the system to homeowners researching for themselves
  • Create brand recognition
  • Explain the business model clearly and concisely
  • Increase Site Traffic by 72%
  • Reduce the bounce rate by 5%

The existing website wasn’t articulating what the benefits were how the system worked, and our relationship with home service providers.
We needed to really understand our customers, end users and the market we were selling in.

The existing website wasn’t articulating what the benefits of the products were, how the system worked, or our relationship with home service providers.
I conducted stakeholder interviews with CEO, VP of Sales, Marketing Coordinator, Operations Associate in order to define the company goals. I created a customer survey for sales techs to ask while on a call with technicians which highlighted the biggest struggles of selling the system and also interviewed homeowners to identify the content on the site that needed work and what attitudes and behaviors users had around homeownership.

UX Design

Our main focus became remedying the pains of homeownership when things go wrong such as pipes freezing or overspending on electricity.
I broke out each product and feature sets according to the different systems within a home plus places for additional resources for homeowners and dealers and information about Building 36 as a company to build credibility
The homepage of the website emphasized the value proposition that the marketing coordinator created. Then the next section gave a high-level description of how we work with dealers to prevent damage to their home and then recommendations from current homeowners who use the system.
Detail pages emphasized how each product solved a particular problem in the home and how it connected to the other systems.

Visual Design

We decided on a visual direction that emphasized comfort, simple to use, and reliable. The thick slab serif Sanchez, conveyed a strong, stableness for the headers while Lato was easy to read on computer screens as well as print. The colors green, blue, orange and the neutral grays offered a sense of approachability and ease of use. We relied heavily on images and iconography to tell the story along with the copy.
